We will discuss how to continue to improve at Jiu Jitsu, especially if you are coming back from a major injury. If you have trained Jiu Jitsu, you most certainly have had injuries at some point. When I speak of injuries, I am NOT referring to aches and pains during normal training. Rather, I am discussing serious injuries that have sidelined you and caused a setback in your training. So how do you begin training again?
PRACTICE YOUR DEFENSE AND WORK ON YOUR WEAKNESSES!
Roger Gracie explains here, How to improve at jiu jitsu | Roger Gracie and Lex Fridman (Lex Fridman YouTube). In this short video, Roger explains how to actually get good at Jiu Jitsu. WORK ON YOUR WEAKNESSES. The only way to do this, is to put yourself in bad positions to work these weaknesses. Escaping positions, submissions in both Gi and No-Gi. This type of training will literally never end because you will always have weaknesses in your game! Furthermore, this type of training applies to all belt levels.
This is a great way to train, especially after a major injury because you want to avoid re-injury and stay injury free so that you don’t have another setback again. Long gone are the days of trying to “win” in training, battle it out with the younger athletic competitors or play the role of mat enforcer. You must truly develop and improve your technique to a point where you aren’t relying on strength as much (you still need strength of course). Focus on technique and WORK ON YOUR WEAKNESSES!
